Advanced Robotics Technology Revolutionizes Food Processing at IPPE 2024

January 2024

Soft Robotics Inc. showcased its innovations at the International Processing and Production Expo (IPPE) from January 30 to February 1, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia. Collaborating with EnSight Solutions, the company introduced mGripAI, a solution aimed at transforming automated food handling.

The mGripAI robot gripper by Soft Robotics is specifically designed to cater to the needs of food processors and consumer packaged goods manufacturers. It integrates 3D perception, soft grasping technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate efficient operations such as high-speed picking, sortation, singulation, and packaging of items.

The mGripAI system comprises Soft Robotics Perception Modules, which serve as the visual component by capturing high-resolution 3D images. These modules act as the "eyes" of the system. Additionally, the Intelligence Module hosts the AI algorithms responsible for processing and analyzing the 3D images. It receives inputs from the Perception Modules and translates them into actionable commands for the robotic arm and gripper. Working in tandem with the Intelligence Module, the mGrip gripper executes the task of picking the designated products.

Along with this eye, the grippers, provided courtesy of Soft Robotics, eliminate human touch, guaranteeing more cleanliness, while avoiding damaging products by leveraging its soft grip technology. Add to that an IP69K rating, it allows for cleaning-in-place.

Combining all these technologies together, business owners can replicate the skills of human workers, while boosting productivity and output, as it can operate at a speed of 90 PPM.

Heath Clifton, Director of Automation and Controls at EnSight Solutions, discussed the potential of mGripAI. "The integration of robotic capabilities in mGripAI allows us to tackle the challenges facing the food and consumer goods industries," Clifton noted, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize bulk picking processes.

Harley Green, Vice President of Strategic Accounts at Soft Robotics, echoed Clifton's sentiment, emphasizing mGripAI's role in meeting industry demands. "mGripAI provides a solution to the challenges encountered by food and consumer goods processors," Green remarked, noting its ability to deliver efficiency, safety, and reliability in automated handling processes.
