In a significant move aimed at bolstering Nigeria's agricultural sector and driving economic prosperity, the federal government has unveiled plans to double cassava production in the country. The announcement was made by the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, during an official visit to the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO) and the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) in Lagos.
Accompanied by the Director-General of FIIRO, Jummai Tutuwa, Minister Nnaji conducted an extensive tour of various facilities within the institute, including the Engineering building, Pulp and Paper division, Cassava processing pilot plant, Exhibition dome, and Training pavilion.
During the visit, Minister Nnaji emphasized the need to fully utilize food processing equipment available at the institute to enhance food production and create employment opportunities. He highlighted the immense potential of cassava processing, noting that Nigeria currently holds the title of the largest global producer of cassava, with an annual output of 64 million metric tons.
"We have Cassava machines here, and with Cassava alone, we can make a fortune in this country because Nigeria is the largest producer of Cassava in the whole world with 64 million metric tons per annum," Minister Nnaji stated. He expressed confidence in Nigeria's ability to leverage technological advancements, particularly the H419 strength, to achieve the targeted increase in cassava production.
In addition to doubling cassava production, Minister Nnaji also outlined plans to support FIIRO in leveraging technology to revive Nigeria's export potential in plantain flour. Stressing the importance of domestic food production, he emphasized the need for Nigeria to become self-sufficient in food items.
The government's announcement of plans to double cassava production underscores its commitment to driving agricultural development as a key driver of economic growth in Nigeria. By harnessing technological innovation and enhancing agricultural productivity, the government aims to stimulate job creation, promote food security, and position Nigeria as a leading player in the global agricultural market.
