GEA Acquires CattleEye: Revolutionizing Dairy Farming with AI

April 2024

In a move signaling a bold stride towards modernizing farming practices, global food processing and packaging technology leader GEA has announced its acquisition of CattleEye, a pioneering agricultural software company based in Northern Ireland. Specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, CattleEye has gained acclaim for its innovative system designed to enhance herd management, particularly in the dairy sector.

While the financial specifics of the acquisition have not been disclosed, the integration of CattleEye's AI technology into GEA's arsenal represents a significant step forward in advancing next-generation farming strategies, with a keen focus on optimizing dairy farming practices.

CattleEye's flagship product stands out as an AI-driven system meticulously engineered to swiftly detect and predict lameness in dairy cows. Lameness, alongside mastitis, stands as a formidable challenge in dairy farming, impacting both the welfare and productivity of cows by affecting fertility and milk yield. By leveraging CattleEye's sophisticated technology, farmers gain invaluable insights into their herd's body condition scores, enabling them to proactively address issues affecting animal health and performance.

At the heart of CattleEye's system lies a sophisticated combination of a 2D camera and specialized software, meticulously analyzing cow movement and body score patterns. This integration offers farmers unprecedented visibility into their herd's well-being, facilitating timely interventions regardless of the milking system employed.

Peter Lauwers, CEO of GEA's farm technologies division, emphasized the importance of integrating CattleEye's advanced AI technology into GEA's DairyNet portfolio, particularly amidst the trend towards larger and more automated dairy farms. He noted, "By adding CattleEye's advanced AI technology, we are expanding our DairyNet portfolio for modern herd management. This can be a game changer for farmers to improve herd health, farm productivity, and financial stability."

CattleEye, founded in 2019 by AgTech entrepreneur Terry Canning and senior software architect Adam Askew, has quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach to leveraging AI in revolutionizing the dairy industry. With a decade of experience in honing deep learning image analytics, CattleEye's system has garnered widespread adoption, currently monitoring over 100,000 cows globally.

Expressing excitement about the acquisition, Terry Canning, CEO, and co-founder of CattleEye, remarked, "CattleEye was born out of a vision to harness the capabilities of advanced artificial intelligence in video analytics to revolutionize the dairy industry. After starting our partnership last year, we are thrilled that GEA will be using and developing this innovative solution with our team to improve animal welfare and drive positive change in the industry."
