South Africa's Mango Industry Poised for Growth with Introduction of Four New Cultivars

March 2024

South Africa's mango industry is on the brink of a transformative era with the recent introduction of four new mango cultivars specifically tailored for the country's unique conditions. This milestone, achieved through a collaborative effort between government and industry partners, marks a significant advancement in research and development within the horticulture sector.

The collaboration, facilitated by the Agriculture and Agro-Processing Master Plan (AAMP), underscores a shared commitment to enhancing productivity and market diversification in South Africa's mango industry. Mashao Mohale, the communication manager of the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC), highlighted the progress made during the recent Mango Cultivar Day, citing it as a testament to the success of the AAMP initiative.

Mr. Mohale emphasized the importance of interventions and commitments by AAMP social partners to strengthen research and development, addressing infrastructure challenges and building capacity within the horticultural industry. Central to these efforts is the introduction of four new mango cultivars, developed by the Agricultural Research Council’s Tropical and Subtropical Crops Division (ARC-TSC) with support from the South African Mango Growers’ Association (SAMGA).

Previously, South African mango growers relied on a limited selection of cultivars, all susceptible to diseases and yielding low production. The new cultivars offer improved resilience and higher yields, presenting a significant advancement for the industry. Mr. Mohale highlighted the potential of these cultivars to boost productivity and expand market offerings, ultimately benefiting both growers and consumers.

The diversification of cultivars not only enhances resilience to diseases but also opens up opportunities for value addition and meets consumer demand for nutritious options. Processed mango products such as dried mangoes and juices are expected to gain popularity, offering new avenues for market growth and economic development.

The commitment to realizing the objectives of the AAMP through ongoing collaboration and partnership between government, industry, and other key stakeholders remains paramount. Mr. Mohale emphasized the potential benefits of a robust mango industry, including increased exports, economic growth, and opportunities for farmers.
